Peer Support Foundational Training

Coming Fall 2023

Meeting the criteria of the Ohio Privileged Communication ORC

The expectation of individuals seeking peer support is that their conversations will remain confidential.  Privileged Communication prohibits a peer support team member from testifying concerning a communication received from an individual receiving peer support services or the team member’s advice to an individual receiving the services.

This protection encourages first responders to talk with someone who understands what they are

experiencing and to seek help before it is a crisis. Peer Supporters normalize stress responses. Having a conversation in a safe place encourages early intervention and may reduce crisis and suicide.

There are some exceptions to this rule. Peers are mandated reporters and must report if a person could be a harm to themselves or others. They must also report abuse of any kind and if any laws are broken. These requirements keep everyone safe.

Here is the legislation.
